SAVE THE DATE! JULY 16, 2020 Virtual Meeting with JANA KARR, SPHR, SHRM-SCP, CEBS Human Resources Consultant, Employers Council

TOPIC:     2020:  The Year We Took Everything We Learned and Threw it Out the Window!

Nobody could have predicted back in January of this year the major shift that would take place before the end of the first quarter.  In a few short months, COVID-19 managed to uproot our lives and shake up the way we do business both figuratively and literally. For Payroll and HR, our biggest worry in January may have been navigating the new W-4 form; in February (in Colorado), it likely was implementing the new wage order, and in March, most may have been finalizing their dreaded ACA reporting.  Oh, how we long for those simpler times, right? This pandemic has moved many of us from transactional to strategic in the blink of an eye.  We have already learned so much from the pandemic regarding how we manage our day-to-day activities, both from a business and a personal perspective.  The notion of work/life balance has also changed for many around the world.  Let’s discuss some of the lessons we have learned in light of COVID-19, and how we take those lessons into the future!

With the passage of the Families First Coronavirus Relief Act (FFCRA) and the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES), the IRS provides employers with multiple tax credits and tax deferrals which reduce employer’s tax liabilities reported on Form 941 beginning with the second quarter of 2020.

In this session, we will examine the new Form 941, and how the worksheet found in the instructions is used to calculate the entries on the 941. We will also review how the Form 7200, which is used to obtain the credits greater than the employer and withheld taxes, interacts with the 941.

After 25 years with the American Payroll Association, Jim Medlock retired and now concentrates his efforts on ensuring payroll professionals guarantee their organizations meet the various federal, state, and local legislative and regulatory compliance issues. While on APA’s staff, Jim shared his knowledge and experience with payroll professionals for nearly 30 years by teaching and preparing materials for APA’s educational programs. He has over 40 years of payroll and accounts payable experience.

Mr. Medlock was the APA’s Payroll Man of the Year in 1991. He was also the Colorado Payroll Person of the Year in 1993.
